Scouts County Camp

Well done to those members of the Kangaroo and Penguin Patrols who attend the Galway Scout County Camp from Friday 29th April to Monday 2nd May 2016. This camp was a camping competition camp with two competitions in progress, the Shield and Plate.

As this is the first time in two years that the Athenry Scouts have attended with many Scouts attending for the first time, the Scout elected to attend the Plate competition which involved Camp Craft, Log Books, Test Meals, Uniform Inspections, Scout Skits and a full day of Activity bases on Sunday followed by a camp fire. The Scouts were marked on each activity.

Several new skills and games were learnt over the weekend which the Scouts will bring back to the Troop and pass on to those Scouts not in attendance at the camp.

Despite some very cold weather on Friday night and a windy night on Sunday the Scouts had a great time making new Scout friends from around the county and they plan to meet these Scouts on some future activities.

Cub Chief Scout Camp

Well done to all those Cubs who attend the recent Cub Chief Scout Camp over the weekend of April 22nd to April 24th. This camp was a required part of the Cubs Chief Scout Award and allowed the cubs to plan and partake in Camp with other cubs undertaking the Chief Scout Award.

As part of the award the Cubs had to cook a meal in a bucket which was then tasted by a team of tasters.

The Chief Scout can to visit and spent time with each group and departed to the sound of a grand howl.

Photos to follow.

First Cub Camp of the Scouting Year

Well done to all to the Cubs who attended the first Cub camp of the Scouting Year. The Cubs  camped in tents in the lovely grounds of Esker Monastery, Esker, Athenry, Co Galway. An action packed weekend was provided with Camp setup on Friday, Adventure Skill activity bases on Saturday morning which were run by some Scouts followed by some wide games on Saturday afternoon.

After dinner on Saturday there was a traditional Scout camp fire. The Beavers joined us for a few hours. The camp fire consisted of numerous Scout Camp fire songs and songs/jokes/stories told by individual Beavers and Cubs.

Sunday morning was Camp pack up, site clean etc with the Cubs departing at 12:30 pm for a long rest. A big thank you to all who helped make the weekend enjoyable.

19th Galway Athenry – First Group Camp

Well done to all the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts who attended our first group camp in Esker Monastery, Athenry over the weekend of Friday 8th May to Sunday 10th May.

The Scouts arrived on Friday night and set up the camp working in Patrols. Each patrol was self sufficient for the weekend, looking after themselves and cooking all of their own meals. They even managed to persuade some Scouters to join them for dinner on Saturday night. The stewed apple topped with Crunchie was particularly nice.

Our Beavers arrived at 19:30 for a forest ramble followed by our very first group camp fire. It is amazing how loud the singing can get with 68 Beavers,Cubs, Scouts and Scouters all around a camp fire. Well done to the Scouts who performed some very entertaining Skits. A special mention to those Beavers and Cubs who told a joke, sang a song or played an instrument.

Camp closed on Sunday at 12:00pm with everyone going home to a well earned rest.

A big thanks to all who helped planned, organise and run the camp.

A special well done to the three Scouts who constructed a flag pole using knots and lashings learnt as part of their Stage 2 Pioneering Badge.
